Other-than-jewelry from the

Miscellaneous
|
These
are items that are not jewelry. Some (see the bookmarks below) are made
with beads, wire and chain like jewelry, but as I branch out into more
work with polymer clay, I've started using it for things other than jewelry
components. Polymer clay can be used in so many ways -- sculpting, making
useful objects, covering things like pens, boxes, vases, tins... many
things. And there are so many techniques that can be used to create with
polymer clay -- combining colors in patterns, mixing new colors from the
basic ones, using alcohol inks to color translucent clay, texturing the
clay with almost anything that will make an impression, and so many others.
Here are some examples of things that have been made of or covered with
polymer clay. I call my clay line of jewelry and other objects "Polymer
Play", because that's really what gives rise to so many variations
on color and form -- play!

Finger labyrinths
|
Finger
labyrinths are miniature versions of the walking labyrinths that date
back to ancient times. Unlike a maze, a labyringth has one path in to
the center, which is retraced to the entrance. To use a finger labyrinth,
trace the path with the forefinger of your non-dominant hand from the
entrance at the bottom of the labyrinth to the space in the center, and
then reverse directions and follow the path back to the outside.

Switch covers
|
These
switch plates are a colorful alternative to the plain plastic ones sold
as standard in homes and apartments. Some of them are recycled from salvage;
others are brand-new, straight out of the package. Currently there are
just two covers for single light switches; in the future there will be
covers for multiple switches and outlets.

Bracelet Helpers
|
These
bracelet helpers make it easier to put on a bracelet with a clasp. To
use it, tuck the end of the bracelet with the loop, ring or other recipient
of the clasp between the two halves of the wire gripper. Hold the helper
in the hand of the wrist you are putting the bracelet on; for instance,
if you are putting the bracelet on your right wrist, hold the helper in
your right hand. Rest it on the center of your wrist and loop the bracelet
around your wrist from top to bottom. Open the clasp with the other hand
and clip it through the other loop, ring, etc. Slide the helper back off
the bracelet, and you're ready to go!

of the ink that was originally in the pen is noted in the description,
but another color can easily be substituted if you prefer it. Available
colors are: black, blue, and red.

Bookmarks
|
These
bookmarks are not made with polymer clay; they are assembled from components
recycled from old jewelry. Each bookmark has a double chain -- to use
it, you can lay it between the pages you want to mark, or put the page
between the two chains, or, if the chains are long enough, slide one section
or the other of the book between the chains.
